LNG

You Do Not Find Liquified Natural Gas. You Can Find Natural Gas And Liquify It.
Owing to the global surge of LNG demand globally, there is a growth in demand for Natural Gas, from which Liquefied Natural Gas is made. The factors driving its demand, are its abundance, ow cost, and eco-friendliness. The Indian Government, on its part, has been taking massive steps for procuring and promoting the usage of LNG. There is the technology behind the global availability of the LNG Molecule, which, to surmise, is a 6-step process, which is mentioned as under:

Extraction

This is the starting point of the LNG molecule's journey. Natural Gas is extracted from the deposits that are found deep beneath the Earth's surface.

Purification

The extracted Natural Gas is processed through several units that remove unwanted elements like Hydrogen Sulphide, Carbon Dioxide, water, Mercury and several other impurities. The man components of LNG, I.e., methane and ethane are separated from other components. Hydrocarbons are separated and their by-products are stored to be used as fuel.

Liquefaction

Several Liquefaction processes are required with a cold box, which condense the gas to a temperature of-162 degree centigrade, which turns the gas into a liquid and reduces its mass volume to l/600th of its original volume.

Transportation

The LNG procured through the above steps is now ready for transportation. In the pre-transportation stage, the LNG is stored in massive special storage tanks, and then transferred to specially designed LNG transportation ships and transported to various other ports of other countries and cities.

Storage

Upon arrival at the port of destination, the LNG s off-loaded from the transport ships and once again stored in specially designed massive storage tanks. These tanks are specially designed to ensure that a specific temperature that is required for LNG is constantly maintained. This temperature helps in keeping the gas in the liquid form.

Regassification

During this final stage, the LNG is heated up to a point till t becomes vapour. This is usually done with the help of seawater, which is warmer than the temperature of the stored LNG. Seawater is primarily used because of ts abundant availability at the storage points, which are set up close to the ports.

Bio LNG

Bio-LNG is a biofuel made by processing organic waste, suchas organic household and industrial waste, manure, etc. Themain benefit of Bio LNG fuel is that its carbon neutral and isas eco-friendly as Liquefied Natural Gas.Bio-LNG is produced from Bio-methane, which s in turnproduced from the bio-gas produced from bio-waste, such ashuman and animal waste, manure, greenery, etc. Bio-methane s essentially consists of the same molecule asNatural Gas. This means that the same process of LiquefiedNatural Gas usage can be followed for Bio-LNG molecule also, thereby effectively eliminating the need of additionalmanufacturing equipment and setup.

Hydrogen Molecule

We all have heard about Hydrogen gas. However, how many of us knew that t is actively being considered as a fuel soon? With recycling being the key, and the common vision of making the best from waste, Hydrogen as fuel is soon going to be the norm. Hydrogen is a by-product of the Natural Gas reforming process. Natural Gas is reformed by three main methods, viz., Steam-Methane Reforming, Partial Oxidation, and Electrolysis.

Steam-methane Reforming

Steam Methane Reforming (SMR) is a process in which methane from natural gas is heated, with steam, usually with a catalyst, to produce a mixture of carbon monoxide and hydrogen, which in turn is used as fuel

Partial Oxidation

In partial oxidation, the main components n natural gas reacts with a limited amount of oxygen that is not enough to completely oxidize them. This causes a reaction that produces a good quantity of hydrogen.

Electrolysis

Electrolysis consists of using electricity to split water into hydrogen and oxygen and is considered to be 70-80% efficient.
